You’ve got male. And female.
How do we manage openings and closings, beginnings and endings, “completions” of cycles and regenerations of life? Can the pivot – and here I am thinking of the Shaoyang pivot channel in Chinese medicine – serve as a useful image?
In short, how do we regulate the processive, both internally and in the larger reality of which we are a part, or, more accurately, from which we are not separate?
And how does this relate to our understanding of past, present and future as a continuous flow with distinct characteristics?
The Shaoyang is one of the Six Axes of the Twelve Primary Channels. It occupies a position which is half-interior and half-exterior – the hinge between open and closed. It thus regulates the movement of qi and blood between the interior and the exterior, i.e. the communication between what is inside and outside the body. If Shaoyang pivots excessively, there can be flaring up of fire and fluids causing sore throat and phlegm. If it does not pivot sufficiently, fire from the interior, the mingmen fire, cannot go outward with resulting cold extremities. [Source: Tom Bisio, Ba Gua Circle Walking Nei Gong. Denver, CO: Outskirts Press, 2012]
With this in mind, we might ask how the function-action of the Shaoyang relates to the dynamic interplay of our personal and social lives. We may re-examine the mode by which energy moves through the pivot between the “historical” past, and the still-taking-form, as-yet-undetermined future. We might then see what we call the present as a pivot regulating temporal movement. It also becomes possible to imagine the Shaoyang as a pivot between our personal (interior) and social (exterior) experience.
Put more sharply, what role does the Shaoyin play in retaining, and dispersing heat and cold? The body, personal and social, functions best, i.e. experiences the most balanced flow of energies, when it is warm, not hot or cold. Otherwise a tremendous amount of our energy goes into maintaining our basal temperature. Is it possible, then, to develop an internal and social awareness of the pivot which would allow us to regulate the temperature, hence the organic health, of our individual, as well as social and political bodies?
Are we carrying too much heat? Or rather packing it? The NRA doesn’t think so. Nor do the extractive industries as a whole. And again, are we doing things that will bring down the heat on us, i.e. the cops, the forces of law and order? What a field day for the heat, sang Buffalo Springfield once. And the Springfield, of course, was the “heat” that did in the great plains herds.
